To make a Spotify QR code, open the song, album, playlist or artist in Spotify, tap the three dot menu, tap Share, and copy the link. Paste that open.spotify.com link into a free QR code generator as a Spotify or URL code, download the SVG, and test the print with a phone camera. Any camera reads it, with or without the Spotify app installed.

The part most guides skip is that Spotify hands out two different scannable things, and only one of them is a QR code. A Spotify Code is the bar pattern the app shows under Show Spotify Code, and only the scanner inside the Spotify app reads it. A Spotify QR code holds a Spotify link, and every phone camera reads it. The sizes below were computed on October 24, 2026 with the same encoder the generator uses, and every statement about Spotify's behavior is quoted from Spotify's own pages, read the same day.

The short version

For anything printed, make a QR code, not a Spotify Code. Spotify's own Codes page states that "Spotify Codes can only be read from the in-app scanner on the Spotify app." A QR code made from the share link opens the same song for anyone who points a camera at it.

Copy the link from the Share sheet, not the Spotify URI. The link looks like open.spotify.com/track/ followed by a 22 character ID; playlists, albums and artists share the shape.

Delete anything after a question mark. A share link copied from the app can carry a tracking parameter such as ?si=... that adds squares to the code. The bare link makes a 41 square code; the same link with a 20 character parameter makes a 49 square code.

Download the SVG for print and keep its white margin. The smallest readable print for a bare Spotify link, margin included, is 16.2 mm (0.64 inches) at 300 dpi, computed from Denso Wave's module guidance.

On QRCodePrime, static QR codes are unlimited and free with no account, and every free account includes 10 dynamic QR codes, free for life, with scan analytics. No credit card required, no watermarks, and no ads on the site or on the redirect.

Spotify Code or QR code: which one you want

A Spotify Code is for sharing inside the Spotify app; a QR code is for print, screens and anyone whose phone may not have the app. The two are made in different places, read by different scanners and bound by different rules.

The link you want starts with open.spotify.com, and Spotify's Share sheet is where it comes from: "Share songs, albums, artists, playlists, podcasts, and your profile from the app." On a phone, open the item, tap the three dot menu, choose Share, and pick the copy link option. On a computer, right-click the item and choose Share; Spotify's page lists "Copy Link" and "Copy embed code" there.

The same page explains the other thing you may run into: "If you need the Spotify URI, hold the ALT key (Windows) or Option key (Mac)." A URI looks like spotify:track:6rqhFgbbKwnb9MLmUQDhG6. It is the address Spotify's app and spotifycodes.com use, and Spotify's developer documentation shows that the 22 character ID at its end is the same ID that ends the open.spotify.com link. For a QR code, use the link: a phone without the Spotify app has nowhere to send a spotify: URI, while the link opens in a browser.

The two example links in this article were checked against Spotify's public oEmbed endpoint on October 24, 2026, which returned the title "Speak To Me - 2011 Remastered Version" for the track and "Today's Top Hits" for the playlist. A link that returns a title is a link that resolves.

How to make a Spotify QR code in five steps

The job takes a few minutes with a phone and the free generator. Steps 1 and 2 are Spotify's share route; steps 3 to 5 are the code.

Step 1. Open the song, album, playlist, artist or podcast in Spotify. For a playlist, open the playlist page itself, not a track inside it, or the code will open the track.

Step 2. Tap the three dot menu, tap Share, and copy the link. It should start with https://open.spotify.com/ and end with the 22 character ID. If a ?si= or any other parameter follows, delete everything from the question mark on.

Step 3. Paste the link into the Spotify QR code generator. The Spotify type encodes the link exactly as pasted, nothing is uploaded, and no account is needed for a static code.

Step 4. Pick Plain, the Spotify icon, or your own logo for the center. On the Spotify page the generator starts with the Spotify icon in the middle of the code; the strip above the preview switches to Plain or to an uploaded logo. Read the logo section below before printing the icon on anything sold.

Step 5. Download the SVG for print, the PNG for screens, and scan the print. Scan a test print with an iPhone and an Android phone, including one without the Spotify app, then read it with the online QR scanner, which labels any open.spotify.com or spotify.link address "Spotify link" and shows the exact link inside the code.

If the destination may change, make the code dynamic in step 3. A free QRCodePrime account includes 10 dynamic QR codes, free for life, with scan analytics, no credit card required and no watermarks; the free dynamic QR code generator lists the types that can be dynamic, and Spotify links are one.

Every bare open.spotify.com link lands on the same code size, and the tracking parameter is what pushes it up a step. The table was built on October 24, 2026 by encoding each format with the qrcode-generator library at error correction level H, the level the generator uses everywhere, and converting squares to print width with Denso Wave's figure of four printer dots per square at 300 dpi plus the four square margin on each side.

What is inside the codeExampleCharactersSquares per sideSmallest print width with margin
Track linkopen.spotify.com/track/6rqhFgbbKwnb9MLmUQDhG6534116.2 mm (0.64 in)
Playlist linkopen.spotify.com/playlist/37i9dQZF1DXcBWIGoYBM5M564116.2 mm (0.64 in)
Album or artist linkThe same shape with a 22 character ID53 to 544116.2 mm (0.64 in)
Track link with a 20 character ?si= parameteropen.spotify.com/track/6rqh...?si=aB3dE5fG7hI9jK1lM744918.8 mm (0.74 in)
Spotify URIspotify:track:6rqhFgbbKwnb9MLmUQDhG6363714.9 mm (0.58 in)
QRCodePrime dynamic short linkqrcodeprime.com/api/r/ plus 8 characters383714.9 mm (0.58 in)

One detail explains the table. At level H the 37 square version holds up to 52 characters, and the shortest bare Spotify link is 52 or 53 characters, so every Spotify link sits at the edge and most tip over into the 41 square version. A tracking parameter pushes it to 49 squares, and in a fixed 1 inch slot each printed square shrinks from 0.52 mm to 0.45 mm. The character limit guide has the full version table.

Three printed cards on a desk beside a mug and a pen, each with a QR code drawn at the same square size. The first is labeled Playlist link, shows a Spotify QR code with the Spotify icon in its center, and reads 56 characters, 41 squares per side. The second is labeled Track link with ?si= parameter, shows a larger code with the Spotify icon, and reads 74 characters, 49 squares per side, prints largest. The third is labeled Dynamic short link, shows a smaller code with a link icon in its center, and reads 38 characters, 37 squares per side, the destination can change. A caption reads Same square size, three payloads: delete the tracking parameter and the Spotify QR code prints smaller.
Illustration by QRCodePrime. The codes are real Spotify and dynamic URL QR codes made with the free generator.

The dynamic short link is the smallest because the printed pattern never holds the Spotify link at all: it holds a 38 character address on qrcodeprime.com, and the server forwards the phone to whatever Spotify link is set in the dashboard.

What opens when someone scans it

A scan opens the open.spotify.com page, and from there Spotify decides between the app and its web player. Spotify's web player help describes it as a way to "Play Spotify from the comfort of your browser on our web player" and lists what the browser needs: on iOS, Chrome 87 or above or Safari 15 or above; on Android, "To use the web player, the device needs to be running Android OS 6.0 or higher." A phone with the Spotify app installed can hand the link to the app; a phone without it lands on that web page, which is what the example track link returned when it was fetched on October 24, 2026.

Whether the listener then needs to sign in, and what they can play, is set by Spotify's plans, not by the code; Spotify's page for its free mobile plan says "Play millions of songs and podcasts for free". The QR code's job ends when the link opens.

Apple's and Google's own support pages document the camera scan; Google's Pixel help puts it in one line: "You don't need to take a picture." None of this applies to a Spotify Code, which only Spotify's own scanner reads.

One code for a playlist that changes: static or dynamic

A playlist's link does not change when its songs change, so a static code keeps working as long as the playlist exists at that address. Spotify says the same about its own Codes: "You can change a playlist title and contents after creating a Spotify Code and it should still work as long as the URI does not change." The link and the URI share the ID, so the same holds for a QR code.

What a static code cannot survive is a change of destination: a cafe that wants a different playlist each season, a flyer that should point at the new single when it drops. A dynamic code solves it. The printed pattern holds the short link, and the Spotify link behind it is edited in the dashboard. The redirect answers with HTTP 302 and tells phones not to cache it, so an edit applies to the next scan, and a deleted dynamic code lands on a page that says the code is not active rather than on a dead link. The guide to editing a QR code after printing walks through it, do QR codes expire covers the static side, and the static versus dynamic comparison has the full trade-off.

On QRCodePrime static codes are free with no account, and every free account includes 10 dynamic QR codes, free for life, with scan analytics, no credit card required and no watermarks. The scan counts are the only way to learn whether the table tents or the window poster is the one people use.

Where the code goes and how big to print it

The floors above are for a code held in the hand. A code read from further away needs to be larger, and the honest way to size it is a test print scanned from the real distance, which Spotify also recommends for its own Codes: "make sure to test your Spotify Code at actual print size before finalizing any printed materials." The table gives starting sizes for a 41 square Spotify link code; the print test guide covers the test, and the events guide and the marketing page cover programs, signs and campaign print.

Spotify Codes on merch, and the Spotify logo in the middle

Spotify's Codes page answers the merch question for its own Codes, and the answer is no. To "Are you interested in using a Spotify Code on goods, products or merch for sale?" the page replies that the use violates its Spotify Code terms: "We are unable to approve because this would imply Spotify's endorsement of your product." It adds that "you would not be able to drive to artist content without permissions from rights holders (artists and labels)."

A standard QR code holding a link is a different object, and Spotify's Codes page does not address it. Two things still follow. The rights point stands on its own: a code on a product for sale that opens someone else's music is a question for the rights holder or a lawyer, not for a generator. And the Spotify logo is Spotify's. The generator's Spotify page starts with the Spotify icon in the center of the code, and Spotify's design guidelines say "The Spotify logo should never be smaller than 70px in digital or 20mm in print" and that the logo "should never be modified, illustrated, characterized, etc." For a gift or a playlist poster in your own cafe, the icon makes the code's purpose obvious. For anything commercial, pick Plain or upload your own logo.

The generator runs at error correction level H, the highest, which is what lets a code survive an icon over its middle; keep the icon the size the generator draws it.

Common Spotify QR code mistakes

Printing a Spotify Code on a flyer and expecting phone cameras to read it. They do not. Spotify says its Codes can be read only from the scanner inside the Spotify app. Make a QR code from the share link instead.

Cropping the white margin to fit a design. Denso Wave, the company that invented the QR code, states that "QR Code requires a four-module wide margin at all sides of a symbol."

Testing only on your own phone. Yours has Spotify installed. Test on a second phone without the app, then read the print with the online scanner. The troubleshooting guide lists the fixes if a print fails.

Common questions about Spotify QR codes

How do I get a QR code for a Spotify playlist?▾

Open the playlist in Spotify, tap the three dot menu, tap Share, and copy the link. It starts with open.spotify.com/playlist/ and ends with a 22 character ID. Delete any ?si= parameter, paste the link into a Spotify or URL QR code generator, download the SVG, and test the print with a phone camera. On QRCodePrime a static code like this is free with no account.

How do I get a Spotify QR code from the Spotify app itself?▾

The app makes a Spotify Code, not a QR code: tap the three dot menu on any song, album, playlist or artist and select Show Spotify Code. Spotify says that Code can only be read from the scanner inside the Spotify app (Search, the search bar, the camera, SCAN). For a printed code any camera should read, copy the share link from the same menu and make a QR code from it.

Does a Spotify QR code open the app or the browser?▾

The code opens the open.spotify.com link. A phone with the Spotify app installed can hand the link to the app; a phone without it lands on Spotify's web player in the browser, which Spotify supports on iOS in Chrome 87 or above and Safari 15 or above and on Android 6.0 or higher.

Will my Spotify QR code stop working if I change the playlist?▾

No, as long as the playlist keeps its address. Adding, removing or reordering songs and renaming it do not change the link; Spotify says the same about its own Codes, which keep working as long as the URI does not change. Deleting the playlist and making a new one does change the link, and then only a dynamic code can be repointed without a reprint.

How big should a Spotify QR code be printed?▾

At least 16.2 mm (0.64 inches) wide including the white margin for a bare Spotify link, which encodes at 41 squares per side at the generator's error correction level, based on Denso Wave's four dots per square at 300 dpi and a four square margin. That is the floor for a code held in the hand. Start a menu code at about 1 inch and a poster at 3 inches, and settle it with a test print scanned from the real distance.

Can I put a Spotify QR code on merch or products I sell?▾

Spotify's Codes page says a Spotify Code on goods, products or merch for sale violates its Spotify Code terms because it would imply Spotify's endorsement, and that driving to artist content needs permission from the rights holders. A standard QR code holding a link is a different object that the page does not address, but the rights question about the music is the same and belongs to the rights holder or a lawyer. For anything commercial, pick Plain rather than the Spotify icon.

Paste the share link, download the SVG. Static codes are free with no account. Every free account includes 10 dynamic QR codes, free for life, with scan analytics. No credit card, no watermarks.
