A text QR code encodes a plain string directly into the code, with no URL, no server, and no internet connection required to decode it. Scanning one opens the text right in the camera app on both iPhone and Android. This makes it perfect for situations where connectivity is unreliable: trade show floors, subway stations, remote event venues, printed instructions in a storage room.

Common uses include embedding a short promo code, encoding a seat number or ticket reference, or sharing a long set of instructions you'd rather not retype. Because the data is baked into the code itself, there's no link to expire and no account to manage.

One thing to know: text QR codes are static by nature. Whatever you encode is permanent, so you can't edit it later without generating a new code. Keep your messages concise; longer strings push you into higher QR error-correction levels, which creates a denser pattern that's slightly harder to scan in poor lighting.

What kind of text can I encode in a QR code?+

Any plain text: letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces, and most Unicode characters including accented letters and emoji. Most QR scanners display the text directly in the camera app without opening a browser. There is a practical limit of around 500-1000 characters before the QR pattern gets dense enough to cause scanning reliability issues, so shorter is better.

Do text QR codes require an internet connection to scan?+

No. That is the main advantage of a text QR code over a URL code. The data is encoded directly in the pattern with no server, no redirect, and no network needed. The phone's camera decodes it locally. This makes text QR codes ideal for trade show floors, subway stations, airplane seat pockets, or anywhere connectivity is unreliable.

Can I edit the text after I generate the code?+

Not without generating a new code. Text QR codes are static: the content is permanently baked into the pattern. If you need to be able to update the encoded data later, you would need to switch to a dynamic QR code (which encodes a URL redirect that you can retarget), though then it is no longer a direct text code.

How much text can a QR code hold?+

Technically up to about 7,000 numeric characters or 4,200 alphanumeric characters, but you will notice the QR pattern becomes very dense well before that limit. A denser pattern is harder to scan, especially in low light or at small print sizes. For reliable scanning across all devices and conditions, try to keep your text under 300 characters.

Will the text QR code work on both iPhone and Android?+

Yes. iOS 11 and later decode QR codes natively in the Camera app and display the text as a notification banner you can tap to copy. Android handles text codes the same way via the Camera or Google Lens. Some older Android devices might need a third-party scanner app, but any free scanner from the Play Store works.

No. The text encoding happens entirely in your browser. The data never leaves your device. We do not log the content of QR codes you generate without an account. This is especially relevant if you are encoding anything sensitive like access codes, PIN numbers, or private notes.

Can I add formatting like bullet points or line breaks?+

Line breaks work fine. The QR code preserves them and most scanners display them correctly. Bullet points and other rich formatting don't work, because QR text is plain Unicode with no markup support. If you need formatted content, encode a URL to a webpage instead.

Will a text QR code work if I print it in black and white?+

Yes, and black-and-white is actually the most reliable. QR codes require high contrast between the dark modules and the light background. Black on white is the gold standard. Color QR codes work fine too as long as contrast is maintained. Just avoid light-on-light or dark-on-dark combinations.

My QR code turned into a dense grid of tiny squares. Why, and will it still scan?+

QR codes automatically add more modules, the small squares, as the encoded data grows, to fit the extra information while keeping error correction intact. A short phrase produces a clean, sparse pattern; a long paragraph produces a dense one. Dense patterns still scan fine at a large enough print size, but they become unreliable at small sizes or from a distance. If your code looks dense, either shorten the text or increase the print size.

Text QR code or URL QR code: which should I use?+

Use a text QR code only when the message truly needs to work with zero internet connection and will never need to change. If there's any chance you'll want to update the message later, or connectivity isn't actually a concern, a URL QR code pointing to a page you control is more flexible: you can edit the page content anytime without reprinting the code.
