Sharing a WiFi password is one of those small friction points that adds up fast. For a hotel, a cafe, or an Airbnb, a WiFi QR code eliminates the awkward exchange of a 16-character password, the squinting at a laminated card, and the "sorry, capital B or lowercase?" moment. The QR code encodes your network name (SSID), password, and encryption type (WPA2 is standard) in a format that Android phones handle natively. iPhones running iOS 11 and later also join the network automatically on scan, no copy-paste required. How does a WiFi QR code work?+
It encodes your network name (SSID), password, and security type (WPA2, WPA3, or open) in a standard format called WiFi Network Config. When someone scans it with an iPhone (iOS 11+) or Android phone, they are prompted to join the network automatically. They never see the actual password, just a 'Join' button.
Does it work with hidden networks?+
Yes. When you check the hidden network option, the QR code includes a flag that tells the device the SSID will not appear in the WiFi scan list. The device then attempts a direct join using the credentials from the code. This works on both iOS and Android, though the exact wording of the prompt varies by OS version.
Will this work on iPhone and Android?+
iPhone running iOS 11 or later: yes, the native Camera app decodes it and offers to join the network. Android 10 and later handle it natively in the Camera app. On older Android versions, Google Lens or any QR scanner app works. It will not work on basic feature phones or very old smartphones.
Is the WiFi password stored by QRCodePrime?+
No. The QR code is generated entirely in your browser. Your WiFi password is never sent to our servers. You can verify this by turning off your internet connection after the page loads and generating a code. It works offline because everything runs locally.
What encryption type should I choose?+
Choose WPA/WPA2 for any modern router. This covers the vast majority of home and business networks set up in the last ten years. WPA3 is the newest standard, so select it if your router specifically advertises WPA3. If your network has no password at all, select None (open). Avoid WEP, which is an outdated security standard.
Can I change the WiFi password without reprinting the QR code?+
No. If you change your password, the old QR code will not work and you will need to generate a new one. This is a good argument for using a stable guest network password that you rotate infrequently, or for creating a dedicated guest SSID with its own stable password separate from your main network.
Can guests see my WiFi password by scanning the QR code?+
Not through the normal scanning flow. The join prompt does not display the password. However, someone with a QR code reader app that shows raw data could decode the QR and read the password in plaintext. Treat a printed WiFi QR code the same way you would treat a printed password: do not post it in publicly accessible areas if the network has sensitive devices on it.
How do I print and display the WiFi QR code?+
Download the PNG or SVG file and add it to a Word document, Canva template, or any design tool. For a cafe or hotel, a 4x6 inch card works well. For an Airbnb, frame it near the front door or on the kitchen counter. Make sure the print resolution is at least 300 DPI. Use the SVG download for the cleanest result at any size.
Guests scan the code but get 'network not found' or the connection fails. What's wrong?+
The most common cause is a typo in the network name (SSID); WiFi names are case-sensitive, so "CafeGuest" and "cafeguest" are different networks. The second most common cause is selecting the wrong encryption type: if your router uses WPA3 but you generated the code as WPA2, or vice versa, some devices will refuse to join. Double check both fields against your router's admin panel before printing.
Should I create a separate guest network for this QR code?+
Yes, if your router supports it. A dedicated guest SSID keeps visitor devices isolated from your main network, printers, smart home devices, work computers, and lets you rotate the guest password on a schedule without disrupting your own devices. Most routers made in the last several years include a guest network option in their admin settings.
