Why a phone QR code beats typing 10 digits

A phone QR code encodes a phone number in the tel: URI format, the standard recognized by every smartphone since iOS 2 and Android 1.0. Scanning it opens the dialer with the number pre-filled, ready to call with one tap. This sounds small, but it removes meaningful friction in contexts where speed matters.

Think about a flyer for a plumber or an electrician. Someone's toilet is overflowing. They're not going to type a phone number. They need to call now. A QR code on a refrigerator magnet or a yard sign means they can dial in two seconds. The same logic applies to restaurant reservation lines, real estate agent call-to-action cards, and roadside business signage.

If you have multiple numbers (main line, after-hours, specific departments), create a separate QR code for each rather than sending everything to one number. Label each code clearly on the printed material. You can also use a click-to-call tracking number as the encoded number if you want to measure how many scans convert to calls.

What format should the phone number be in?+

Include the full international dialing code, for example +14155551234 for a US number. This ensures the code works when scanned outside your home country. The plus sign and digits are standard tel: URI format. Avoid parentheses and dashes; they add visual noise without function.

Will the code make the call immediately, or just pre-fill the dialer?+

It pre-fills the dialer with the number displayed and ready to call. The user taps the call button themselves. No QR code can auto-initiate a call without user confirmation. This is an intentional OS-level security restriction on both iOS and Android.

Can I use a toll-free or international number?+

Yes. Any valid phone number works, including toll-free numbers (like +18001234567 in the US), international numbers with country codes, and extension numbers. For extensions, you can append a pause using a comma followed by the extension digits. Some dialer apps handle this, though it is not universally supported.

Does this work for WhatsApp calls?+

No. A tel: QR code opens the standard phone dialer, not WhatsApp. For a QR code that opens a WhatsApp chat (which can be used to start a WhatsApp call from within the app), use our WhatsApp QR code generator instead.

Can I track how many people call from the QR code?+

Not directly with a static phone QR code. To measure scan-to-call conversion, use a call tracking number (services like CallRail, Twilio, or Google Voice) as the encoded number. Calls to the tracking number get logged and forwarded to your real line, giving you analytics without the user noticing any difference.

Will this work on every phone?+

Any smartphone with a phone dialer and QR code scanning capability can handle a tel: QR code. That covers essentially every iOS and Android device made in the last eight years. Basic feature phones with QR scanners can usually display the number even if the direct dialer integration varies.

Can I include a phone number and a text message in the same QR code?+

No. A single QR code can only encode one action type. For a combined call/text option, you would need two separate codes. Alternatively, encode a URL to a mobile-optimized landing page with both a call button and an SMS button. That gives users the choice and works better at scale.

What size should I print the phone QR code for a yard sign or outdoor banner?+

For outdoor signage viewed from a moving vehicle or from across a street, the QR code needs to be large enough that the camera can resolve the pattern. The guideline: code size in centimeters should be at least 1/10 of the expected scanning distance in centimeters. From 3 meters away, that is at least 30 cm. Test the scan at the intended distance before committing to a final print.

The code opens the dialer but the number looks wrong or incomplete. Why?+

This is almost always a formatting issue in the original number, most often a missing country code or a stray character the dialer can't parse. Re-check the number for the correct international format, for example +14155551234, with no parentheses, dashes, or spaces, and regenerate the code.

Can I use the same phone QR code for both calls and texts?+

Not with one code. A tel: QR code only opens the dialer. To also enable texting, either generate a separate SMS QR code with the same number, or place both codes side by side on your printed material labeled "Call" and "Text."
