Why vCard QR codes beat business cards

A vCard QR code encodes your contact details (name, phone, email, company, website, address) in the standard VCF format that every modern smartphone understands. When someone scans it, they're prompted to add you to their contacts with a single tap. No typing, no typos, no "I'll find you on LinkedIn" promises that get forgotten.

This is particularly useful at networking events where you might hand your card to twenty people. Instead of hoping they'll manually enter your details later, the QR code does it instantly. Place it on the back of your business card, in your email signature, or on your conference lanyard. It works on both iPhone and Android, and the contacts app handles the import natively on both platforms.

One pro tip: include your LinkedIn URL in the website field so recipients have a second touch point. You can update the vCard data by generating a new QR code, but if you've already printed cards, you're stuck with the old data. Double-check everything before committing to a print run.

What information can I include in a vCard QR code?+

The VCF format supports: first and last name, job title, company, mobile and office phone numbers, email addresses, physical address, website URL, and a short note field. Most QR code scanners and native contact apps import all of these fields automatically. LinkedIn profile URLs fit well in the website field.

Will vCard QR codes work on iPhone and Android?+

Yes on both. On iPhone, scanning the code with the Camera app shows the contact card and prompts you to add it to Contacts. On Android, the native Camera or Google Lens does the same. The VCF format is the universal contact standard and has been supported on every smartphone platform for over a decade.

Can I update my contact details after printing?+

Not with a static vCard code. Whatever you encoded is permanent until you generate a new code. If you change your phone number, email, or job title, you will need to generate a new QR code and reprint. For roles where contact details change frequently, use a dynamic QR code that points to an online contact page instead.

How is this different from just sharing my phone number?+

A vCard code captures your entire contact profile in one scan: name, title, company, multiple numbers, email, address, website. It imports cleanly into their address book with all fields labeled correctly. Sharing just a number requires the recipient to manually add the name and company later, which many people skip.

Is my contact information stored on QRCodePrime servers?+

No. The code is generated locally in your browser. Your personal details are never transmitted to our servers or stored anywhere. You can confirm this by watching your browser's network tab while generating the code. No outbound request containing your data will appear.

Can I include a photo in the vCard?+

The VCF format supports embedding a contact photo, but the QR code would become enormous and unreliable if you include image data. We do not support photo embedding for that reason. If you want a photo associated with your contact, link to an online profile (LinkedIn, a personal website) in the website field.

What if someone scans it and already has my contact?+

Both iOS and Android will prompt the user to either create a new contact or merge/update the existing one. If they have an outdated version of your details, this is actually a nice way to push an update. Put the QR code in your email signature and people who scan it can refresh their records.

What format should I choose when downloading: PNG or SVG?+

Use SVG for print. SVG is a vector format that scales infinitely without losing sharpness, making it suitable for anything from a business card to a banner. PNG is better for digital use (email signatures, websites) where you know the display size in advance. For both, make sure the final printed size is at least 2 cm x 2 cm.

The scan just shows raw text instead of offering to save a contact. Why?+

This usually happens when the scan is done with a third-party QR reader app rather than the phone's native Camera app. Native Camera apps on iOS and Android recognize the VCF format and prompt to add a contact; some standalone scanner apps just display the raw decoded text instead. Tell people to use their default Camera app, not a separate scanner app, for the best experience.

Should I use my personal cell number or a company line?+

For roles where you're the direct point of contact, like sales or freelance work, your personal cell number in the vCard makes you easy to reach right away. For roles where continuity matters more than a specific person, like a support desk, use a company line so the contact stays valid even if you change roles or leave the company.
