Why QR codes stop working elsewhere

A static QR code holds your link inside the pattern. No company sits between the code and your page, so nobody can turn it off. A dynamic QR code is different. It holds a short link that belongs to the tool you made it with, and that short link forwards people to your page.

That forwarding step is what makes editing possible. It is also the catch. If the tool runs on a trial, the forward can be switched off when the trial ends, and every flyer, menu and sign you already printed starts landing on an error page or a payment page. The code is not broken. The redirect behind it was stopped.

You can check any code you already have. Open our online QR code scanner, upload a picture of the code and look at the address it shows. If it goes to a short link instead of your own site, it is a dynamic code that depends on whoever owns that short link. Our static vs dynamic guide covers when each kind is the right pick.

How to make a dynamic QR code, step by step

  1. Create a free account. Email and a password, nothing else.
  2. In the generator above, switch from Static to Dynamic.
  3. Paste the link you want the code to open today. You can change it later.
  4. Pick colors, a dot style and a logo if you want them, then press Create my dynamic QR code.
  5. Download the PNG for screens, or the SVG or PDF for print, and test it with your phone.
  6. When the destination changes, edit the link in your dashboard. The printed code stays the same.

When a dynamic code is worth it

Use a dynamic code for anything printed that might outlive its link: menus, packaging, real estate signs, event posters, business cards and mailers. If the page moves, you fix the link in a minute and skip the reprint.

Use a static code when the content will not change, such as a WiFi login, a contact card or a permanent web address. It needs no account and depends on nobody.

A useful rule: if reprinting would cost you more than ten minutes or ten dollars, make it dynamic.

Already printed a code that stopped working?

A code from another tool cannot be revived from here, because its short link belongs to that tool. The practical fix is to make a new dynamic code, point it at the right page and cover the old one. For menus and signs, a printed sticker the same size as the old code is usually enough.

Before you reprint anything, run the new file through the scanner and check that it reads back the address you expect.

Questions about free dynamic QR codes

Are the dynamic QR codes really free?+
Yes. Every free QRCodePrime account includes 10 dynamic QR codes, free for life, with scan analytics. There is no credit card form, no trial clock and nothing to cancel. Static QR codes are unlimited and need no account at all.
Do QRCodePrime dynamic QR codes expire?+
No. A dynamic code keeps working for as long as you keep it in your account. Nothing switches it off after 14 days or at the end of a month, because there is no trial behind it.
Can I change where the code goes after I print it?+
Yes, that is the point of a dynamic code. Open your dashboard, edit the destination link and save. The printed code stays the same and the next scan lands on the new page.
Which kinds of QR code can be dynamic?+
Codes that open a link: website URLs, WhatsApp chats, Facebook pages, YouTube videos and Spotify links. WiFi, contact card, text, email, SMS, phone and location codes are static by nature, because the information sits inside the pattern itself. Static codes never expire either.
What happens when I have used all 10?+
Delete a dynamic code you no longer need and the slot is free again. You can also make as many static codes as you like. Static codes cannot be edited later, but they cost nothing and never stop working.
Do people who scan my code see ads or a waiting page?+
No. The redirect goes straight to your destination. There are no ads, no countdown pages and no QRCodePrime branding on the way, and the downloaded code carries no watermark.
What do the scan analytics show?+
For every dynamic code you see total scans, plus the location and device type of each scan. It is there to tell you whether a flyer, a table tent or a sign is doing its job.
