- Common questions about QR code scan limits
A QR code scan limit is a cap some generators put on how many times a dynamic code can be opened in a month before it stops forwarding. Static codes have no scan limit, because no server is involved. On October 4, 2026 we read the pricing and FAQ pages of 13 generators and copied what each one says about scan limits, free dynamic codes and what happens when a free period ends, quoted word for word with links.
This is a reference page, not a review. Every row has a source, every quotation was checked against the live page by a script on the date given, and anything a page did not say is marked as not stated rather than guessed. If a vendor changes a page, the row is wrong from that day on, so check the source before you rely on a row.
The short version
Static codes never have a scan limit. The data is in the pattern. Every page we read that mentions static codes says they do not expire, and the generators that make only static codes say the same of all their codes.
Dynamic codes are where limits live. They forward through the vendor's server, so the vendor can count scans and switch the forwarding off. Of the 13 generators, four state a monthly scan cap on their free dynamic codes, three state that free dynamic codes stop working or go inactive when a free period ends, one states that its free dynamic codes keep working but display ads, and the rest state no cap on the pages we read.
The number to look for is not the cap but the condition. A cap you never reach is harmless. "Stops working when the trial ends" is the sentence that takes a printed sign down.
On QRCodePrime, static QR codes are unlimited and free with no account. Every free account includes 10 dynamic QR codes, free for life, with scan analytics. No credit card required, no watermarks, and no ads on the site or on the redirect. The only limit the code enforces is the count of 10 dynamic codes.
What each generator states, in its own words
The table lists the generator, the page we read, the sentence or sentences on that page about scan limits or expiry, and the condition under which a dynamic code stops forwarding, as the page states it. Quotations are exact; where a page gives a number without a full sentence, the number is paraphrased and marked as such. Read on October 4, 2026.
| Generator and page read | What the page states about scan limits and expiry | When a free dynamic code stops forwarding, as stated |
|---|---|---|
| QR Tiger, FAQ page | "You can sign up for our Free version any time, where you can generate three free dynamic QRs with a 500 scan limit each." and "If your plan expires, it will stop working." | At 500 scans per code, or when the plan expires |
| QRCode Monkey, home page | "QR Codes created with QRCode Monkey are static and do not stop working after a certain time." and "There is no limit and the created QR code will work forever." | Not applicable: the free codes are static |
| Uniqode (formerly Beaconstac), pricing page | "We have a 14-day free trial so you can experience everything we offer." and "Once your free trial expires, any dynamic QR Codes you created will become inactive." | When the 14-day trial ends |
| Uniqode, free generator page | "All static QR Codes created with Uniqode's QR Code generator are completely free and never expire." | Not applicable for the static codes this page makes |
| Scanova, pricing page | "Explore every feature of Scanova with a 14-day trial." and, on the same page, "Your Dynamic QR Code will stop working once the free trial ends." | When the 14-day trial ends |
| QR Code Generator (qr-code-generator.com), pricing page | Paraphrased from the plan table: the Starter plan lists 2 dynamic QR codes and 10,000 scans, the Advanced plan lists 50 dynamic codes and unlimited scans, and the page offers a 14-day free trial with no credit card needed. | At the plan's scan count, or when the trial ends; the page does not state the end-of-trial behavior in a sentence |
| QRStuff, pricing page | "Static QR codes are permanent and will never expire." and "The Free Suite includes 50 scans per month and the Lite Suite allows for 200." | At 50 scans per month on the free plan |
| The QR Code Generator (TQRCG), pricing page | "The Free plan lets you create 2 dynamic QR Codes and unlimited static QR Codes at no cost." and "On The QR Code Generator: After your free trial ends, two dynamic QR Codes will remain active but they will display ads." | They keep forwarding but show ads after the trial |
| QRCodeChimp, pricing page | "Under the free plan, we provide 1000 scans per month free for all the dynamic codes combined." and "If it's dynamic, it will be paused if their scan limit for the month is reached." | At 1,000 scans per month across all free dynamic codes |
| QRCodeKit, pricing page | "The Free plan includes 2 dynamic QR codes, 100 scans per QR code per month and basic QR design features." | At 100 scans per code per month |
| Bitly, QR Codes product page | "Bitly QR Codes don't expire on their own." | Not stated on the page read; the page describes a free plan with no credit card needed |
| Adobe Express, QR code generator page | "Your QR codes never expire." | Not applicable: the page describes static codes |
| goQR.me, home page | "The stored data cannot be changed and therefore a QR code does not "expire" after a certain time." | Not applicable for the free static codes; dynamic codes are a separate paid product the page calls QR-Server |
| ME-QR, FAQ page | "Yes, our codes are dynamic, so you can change not only the content but also the type of code itself." | Not stated on the pages read |
Two notes on reading the table. QR Code Generator's page presents its numbers in a plan grid rather than in sentences, which is why that row is paraphrased. And Bitly's and ME-QR's pages did not state a scan cap or an end-of-free-period rule in the text we fetched; that is recorded as not stated, which is different from none.
How the pages were read, and what was not checked
Each page was fetched once on October 4, 2026 with a plain HTTP request and the text was searched for sentences containing scan, limit, expire, trial, forever, inactive or dynamic. Every quotation above was then checked again by a script that fetched the page and confirmed the quoted words appear in it, allowing only for straight versus curly quotation marks.
What was not checked: nobody signed up for any of these services, so a stated limit was not tested by scanning a code 501 times. Pages that build their content with JavaScript after loading (Canva's QR generator page and Flowcode's pricing page among them) returned no readable sentences to a plain fetch and are left out rather than guessed at. Prices are left out on purpose, because they change more often than the rules do. QR Tiger's pricing page returned a not found error on the day, so its FAQ page is the source for that row.
Why a scan limit is possible at all
A scan limit only exists because a dynamic code does not hold your page. It holds a short link on the vendor's domain, and the vendor's server forwards each scan to the destination you set. Since every scan passes through that server, the server can count them, and it can stop forwarding when a counter or a calendar says so. A static code points straight at your page, so there is no server between the phone and the destination and nothing to count.
That is also why the end-of-trial sentences matter more than the caps. A cap pauses forwarding until the month resets. A trial ending removes the forwarding altogether, and every printed copy of the code then opens whatever the vendor puts at that short link, which is usually a page about the vendor. The repair options for a code in that state are in QR code expired: what happened and how to fix it, and the difference between the two kinds is laid out in static versus dynamic QR codes.
How to tell what a printed code depends on
You can find out in a minute what a code in your hand relies on, without an account anywhere. Read it with the online QR scanner, which shows the address inside the pattern without opening it.
| What the scanner shows | What it depends on | Can it hit a scan limit? |
|---|---|---|
| Your own page address | Your website only | No |
| A short link on a QR vendor's domain | That vendor's forwarding, and the account that owns it | Yes, if that vendor states one |
| qrcodeprime.com/api/r/ followed by 8 characters | QRCodePrime's forwarding, free for life | No scan limit is enforced; the only limit is 10 dynamic codes per free account |
| Text starting with WIFI:, BEGIN:VCARD, geo:, tel: or mailto: | Nothing. The data is in the pattern | No |
If the address is a vendor short link, the row for that vendor in the table above tells you the stated rule. If the vendor is not in the table, its pricing or FAQ page is where the rule lives; search that page for the words scan and trial.
Choosing with the table in hand
For a print that must outlive any account, a static code from the free QR code generator is the only kind with no condition attached. Put the destination on a domain you control.
For a code you may need to repoint, choose a dynamic code from a generator whose stated rule you can live with. On QRCodePrime, every free account includes 10 dynamic QR codes, free for life, with scan analytics, no credit card required and no watermarks, and the free dynamic QR code generator is where to make one. How repointing works is in how to edit a QR code after printing.
For a campaign with a real chance of a few thousand scans a month, read the caps in the table before you print. A sign at a trade show can pass 500 scans in a weekend.
If you want no account at all, the QR code generator with no sign-up explains what a static code gives you and what it cannot do.
Mistakes this table is meant to prevent
Reading "free" as "free for life". Several of the pages above describe a free period, not a free plan, and say so in the next sentence. Read the next sentence.
Assuming a static code can have a limit. It cannot. If a tool tells you a static code will expire, the code it made is not static.
Printing a dynamic code before reading the end-of-period rule. The cap is survivable; the deactivation is not.
Trusting this table next year. The rows are dated for a reason. Vendors change pages; the sources are linked so you can check.
Judging by the question "do QR codes expire" alone. The pattern never expires. What expires is the forwarding, and only when the vendor's rule says so, which is covered in plain terms in do QR codes expire.

Common questions about QR code scan limits
Is there a limit to how many times a QR code can be scanned?▾
A static QR code has no limit, because the destination is stored in the pattern and no server is involved. A dynamic QR code forwards through the generator's server, and some generators cap how many times the free codes can be opened in a month. On the pages we read on October 4, 2026, QR Tiger states 500 scans per free code, QRStuff 50 per month, QRCodeKit 100 per code per month and QRCodeChimp 1,000 per month across all free dynamic codes.
What happens when a QR code reaches its scan limit?▾
The forwarding pauses. QRCodeChimp's pricing page says a dynamic code "will be paused if their scan limit for the month is reached". The printed pattern is unchanged, and the scan still reads the short link, but the link no longer forwards until the counter resets or the account changes. A static code cannot reach a limit.
Do free QR codes stop working?▾
Free static codes do not. Free dynamic codes can, depending on the generator's rule: some pause at a monthly scan cap, and some go inactive when a free period ends. Uniqode's pricing page states that once the free trial expires, dynamic codes become inactive, and Scanova's says the same. On QRCodePrime the 10 dynamic codes in a free account are free for life and are not switched off.
Does QRCodePrime have a scan limit?▾
No scan limit is enforced. Static QR codes are unlimited and free with no account. Every free account includes 10 dynamic QR codes, free for life, with scan analytics, and the count of 10 is the only limit the code applies. No credit card is required, there are no watermarks, and there are no ads on the redirect.
How do I know if my QR code has a scan limit?▾
Read the code with a scanner that shows the address without opening it, such as the QRCodePrime online scanner. If the address is your own page, the code is static and has no limit. If it is a short link on a QR vendor's domain, the vendor's pricing or FAQ page states the rule; the table in this article has the sentences for 13 of them, read on October 4, 2026.
Why do some QR code generators limit scans?▾
Because a dynamic code's scans all pass through the vendor's server, the server can count them, and counting scans is how those vendors separate free use from paid use. The limit is a business rule, not a property of QR codes. Static codes have no server in the path and cannot be counted or capped.
